English Language GCSE - Pathway 1

The course places equal emphasis on the acquisition of language skills and on the development of an informed response to literature.

All pupils will follow both Language and Literature courses leading to two separate G.C.S.E. examinations offered by A.Q.A.The examination will consist of:

Unit 1 - Externally Assessed Examination (40%)

Pupils are required to answer 4 questions based on non-fiction texts.

Unit 2 - Speaking & Listening (20%)

Students will present, discuss and roleplay to an audience.

Unit 3 - Internally controlled Assessment (40%)

Students are required to complete 4 pieces of work that will take place under exam conditions but will be internally assessed.

English Literature GCSE - Pathway 1

This course is based on the conviction that the study of Literature should centre on an informed personal response to a range of texts in the genres of prose, poetry and drama.

Units 1 & 2 Examination (75%)

Consists of writing on the Anthology and writing on a ‘set text’.

Unit 3 Internally Controlled Assessment (25%)

Will be based on two texts from a selection of prose and drama. This will be internally assessed under exam conditions.

The examination will consist of:

Unit 2 - Speaking & Listening (20%)

Unit 3 - Internally controlled Assessment (40%)

Pupils are required to complete 4 pieces of work that will take place under exam conditions but will be internally assessed

The Entry Level Certificate

This is designed to support students who are working at Grade G or below at GCSE.

The Entry Level requirements state that 50% of the assessment must consist of tasks or assignments which are externally set, marked and/or moderated externally, and conducted under supervised conditions.

This is a unit-based specification, with students required to complete six of the units provided.
